How to Prepare Your HVAC System for Summer

Get ahead of the heat with these simple steps to prepare your HVAC system for summer. A little maintenance now can prevent costly repairs later.

Spring is the ideal time to give your HVAC system some attention before summer arrives. A few simple steps can improve efficiency, extend equipment life, and help you avoid a breakdown on the hottest day of the year.

Replace Your Air Filter

A clogged air filter is one of the most common causes of HVAC problems. It restricts airflow, forces the system to work harder, and reduces indoor air quality. As a rule of thumb, replace standard 1-inch filters every 30–60 days and thicker media filters every 6–12 months. With pets or allergies in the home, err on the more frequent side.

Clean the Outdoor Unit

Over winter, your outdoor condenser unit can accumulate leaves, dirt, and debris. Turn off power to the unit, then gently rinse the coils with a garden hose from the inside out. Clear at least two feet of space around the unit and trim back any vegetation. Restricted airflow around the condenser reduces efficiency significantly.

Check Your Thermostat

Test your thermostat by setting it to cool and confirming the system kicks on properly. If you're still running an older programmable thermostat, consider upgrading to a smart thermostat. The ability to set schedules and control your system remotely can reduce energy use by 10–15%.

Inspect Vents and Ductwork

Walk through your home and make sure all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed. Furniture, rugs, and curtains blocking vents create pressure imbalances that reduce efficiency. If you notice uneven cooling between rooms, your ductwork may have leaks worth investigating.

Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

Even if everything seems fine, an annual professional maintenance visit can catch issues you'd never spot on your own. A Satterlee technician will check refrigerant levels, clean the evaporator and condenser coils, inspect electrical connections, lubricate moving parts, and verify the system is running at peak efficiency.

Don't wait for a breakdown in 95-degree heat. Schedule your summer tune-up with Satterlee today.
